FIRE PROTECTION

QUESTION OF NIGHTWATCHMAN SERVICE SPECIAL RATING AREA SUGGESTED The town still remains without the services of a nightwatchman. That information was given to last night’s meeting of the Chamber of Commerce.

The president Mr S. H. Wanklyn, reported that Police Superintendent Capp, of Hamilton, visited Te Awamutu that day (Tuesday) and had stated the present police staff in the town should be sufficient for Te Awamutu.

Mr A. G. Warburton suggested that the Borough Council should declare a special rating area and thus relieve a nightwatchman from having to go cap in hand to business people for weekly contributions, for there were always those who rode on the backs of willing contributors. The question of incipient fires was one of the greatest importance to business people who automatically got the services of a nightwatchman. Mr Warburton gave notice of motion to move that the Borough Council give consideration to the requirements of the Borough in regards a nightwatchman service by using their prowess to levy a rate over a special area.
