KAWHIA BOWLERS
SECOND OPEN TOURNAMENT A SUCCESSFUL DAYThe second open tournament held by the Kawhia Bowling Club took place on Sunday last and was a pronounced success. Visitors were present from Raglan, Te Awamutu, and Otorohanga, and in all twelve teams competed, the games being keenly contested. Honours of the day went to a Raglan rink skipped by Pearce, who won all their five games. The President, Mr Les W. Spence, in opening proceedings, welcomed all, especially the visitors who had travelled distances in order to enable the Kawhia Club to hold the tournament. The following rinks competed, there being five games of one and a quarter hours’ duration, skips names being mentioned first:— Oldbury (Kawhia), Babbage, Clark, Bush. Lentfer (Kawhia), Nesbit, Ellis. At the conclusion of play the President of the Kawhia Club presented trophies to the winners, and thanked one and all; especially the ladies who had undertaken the catering, for their help and co-operation. Mr R. Pearce suitably replied. Mr M. Oldbury, in the course of a short, appropriate speech, thanked Mr and Mrs Spence fox’ the splendid work and services rendered in making the tournament such a success. He paid a glowing tribute to Mr Spence as President, who he regarded as the driving force of the Club. The previous evening the local Club entertained the visitors and their own members at a largely-attended smoke concert, a few pleasant hours being spent in harmony.
