LIGHTS TURNED ON
WAIPAPA PA HALL SUCCESSFUL DANCE I The hall at Wf'aipapa Pa, Kawhia. was the scene of high festivity on Friday night last, when the electric lights were turned on for the first time. The building had been gorgeously decorated by the ladies of the pa, and presented a colourful spectacle. The dance drew a crowd of record dimensions, people coming from all parts of the district. Promptly at eight o’clock Mir Tau Wetere, amid applause and general rejoicing, switched on the lights, and thereafter the large assemblage indulged in the light fantastic to lilting music supplied by the Foor-Five Orchestra from Te Kuiti and under the able direction of Mr M. Pouwhare as master of ceremonies.
During the evening dancing competitions were won by Miss Mierle Ormsby and Mr Mana Reti; Miss Betty Hone and Mr G. E. Gould, and
Miss Rosie Hohua and Mr M. Te Hai.
An action song was sung and acted by Mrs Nora Pikia, Masses Ruth Wetere, Lena Pouwhare, Polly Inia, Margaret Thompson, Betty Pikia, Nancy Pouwhare, Nora WJetere, and Mary Moke. Later, the same party, with the addition of Miss Louie Ne_rai, danced a poi dance. An exhibition hula was given by Mirs Wai Tipene, a visitor from Sydney, being assisted by Mr Poto Ngaru. All the items were greatly appreciated and receive dwith vociferous applause. During an appropriate interval a beautiful painting of flowers, handsomely framed, was presented to the Hall Committee by the Tai family, of Oparau. The supper was of the sumptuous nature associated with all such gatherings. Mr George Sturmey thanked all for their support, and remarked that the event would ever remain a memorable one in the history of the Waipapa Pa.
