THE BRANCH AT KINOHAKU MONTHLY COMPETITIONS There was a good attendance at the September meeting of the Kinohaku branch of the Women’s Division, Miss C. Scott presiding over the first part of the proceedings and the President, Mrs T. Brough, over the remainder. Mrs C. Palmer gave an interesting report on the proceedings at the subprovincial meeting at Te , Kuiti the previous day, which she had attended together with the secretary, Mrs J. Scott. She was cordially thanked for her report. It was decided to hold the annual ball on Friday, 22nd October. The month’s competitions resulted as follows:—• Seniors Best bloom: Mrs C. Palmer 1, Miss V. Moore and Mrs T. Brough 2. An arrangement of daffodils: Mrs J. Scott, Mrs B. C. Johnson, and Mrs R. Clarke all tied. Sponge roll: Mrs J. Scott 1, Mrs C. Palmer and Miss V. Moore 2. Knitting: M,rs J. Fitzgibbon 1, Mrs L. Harper 2. Sewing: Mrs L. Harper 1, Mrs G. Derecourt and Mrs M. Neeley 2. Needlecraft: Mrs R. Clark 1. Juniors Best bloom: Judith Palmer 1, Jennifer Brough 2, Judith Brough 3. Necklet made from flowers: Raewyn Fitzgibbon 1. October Meeting The October meeting of the branch was held on Saturday last, when, despite the boisterous weather conditions, there was a good attendance. The President, Mrs T. Brough, occupied the chair. The roll call, “ Embarrassing Moments,” created considerable merriment. An interesting demonstration of the icing of a child’s birthday cake was given by Mrs R. Fordham, of Te Anga, who was cordially thanked. Arrangements for the annual Flower Show to fie held in November were further advanced. Harper and Mrs R. Clarke 2 (a tie). Juniors Best bloom: Jennifer Brough 1, Peggy MacDonald and Marie Brown 3. Kawhia Cruising Club At an enthusiastic meeting of those interested it was decided to form “ The Kawhia Cruising Club.” The following officers were appointed: President, Mr A. W. Jonathan; secretary, Mr G. E. Gould: committee, Messrs H. A>. Spooner, J. Greer, J. McU. Robertson, and A. E. Hills. The Club intends to promote week-end cruises and sailing races during the coming summer months. Ragwort Eradication

According to a statement made by the engineer at last week’s meeting of the Kawhia County Council, about half the quantity of chemicals required this year for ragwort eradication has been purchased. In his written report the engineer stated that a start would be made with the work about the middle of the month. Spraying would be carried out in suitable localities, and in other places dusting would be employed. “On recent observations,” he added, “ in the localities treated last year a marked improvement is so far noticed.”
