HYDRO-ELECTRIC WORKS
IMPORTATION OF TRADESMEN AMPLE ROOM FOR WORKERS “One thousand additional workmen, all single, will be selected in the United Kingdom under the Government immigration scheme to accelerate progress in State hydro-electric development,” said the Minister of Immigration (Mr McLagan) in Wellington, recently, “This decision has been taken at the request of the Ministry of Works and on the advice of the Immigration Advisory Council. “The men to be selected will include carpenters, fitters, turners, crane, shovel and dragline drivers, plumbers, drainlayers, electricians, and labourers. In view of the magnitude of the hydro-electric projects the Government is anxious to push ahead, and several other very large developmental works which are imminent, it will be apparent that there is ample
scope for the various types of tradesmen to be selected.” “There is ample room for these men on hydro-electric projects in this country,” said the Minister in Charge of the State Hydro Department (Mr Semple). “We are seriously short of this type of labour. What we want really are competent and willing-workers—-men who are not afraid of hard work and who will pull their weight and be an asset instead of a liability to the country.”
