WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

THE BRANCH AT OPARAU SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL The Oparau Women’s Institute hold H very enjoyable social evening on Monday, 6th September, in aid of the Parcels for Britain funds. The programme comprised the following items: Women’s Institute Choir, singing; trio, Mesdames S. Wright and D. Noonan and Miss J. Reeve; piano solo, Mi’s D. Noonan; duet, Miss J. Reeve and Mr R. Clark; solo, Mr W. Langdon; play, Women’s Institute Drama Circle, written and produced by Mrs D. Noonan; Irish jig, Miss Evelyn Myhill; duet, Mr and Mrs W’. Langdon. The bring-and-buy produce was auctioned by Mr G. Allen. After supper there was dancing, the music was supplied by Mfesdames S. Wright and W. Langdon. Mr A. Randall was master of ceremonies. The results of the bulb show held during the evening were as follows: One bloom: Mrs A. Randall 1. Mrs A. Palmer. 2; Mrs D. Noonan, 3. Three blooms: Mrs A. Palmer, 1; Mrs A. Palmer, 2; Mirs D. Noonan, 3. Six blooms: Mrs M. Gilbert, 1; Mrs A. Randall 2. Vase of blooms: Mrs A. Palmer 1; Mis A. Palmer, 2; Mrs A. Atkins, 3. Monthly Meeting A monthly meeting of the Onarau Women’s Institute was held on Thursday afternoon. There was a fair attendance of members oresided over by Mrs A. Randall. Mirs S. Wright officiated as secretary for the afternoon in the absence of Mrs R. Clark. It was decided that contributions of Is 6d by members to the sales table,

instead of produce, should be voluntary. Two new members, Mrs G. Dawson and Mrs Myhill, were welcomed to the Institute. Mr G. Allen is to be asked if the school children will design a suitable banner for the Oparau Women’s Institute. Members will also approach the Hall Society’s committee to ask for repairs to be done to the hall piano. The hostesses were Mesdames E. Jordan and W. Langdon. The result of the bring-and-buy table was £1 4s. There were only two entries in the felt competition. Mirs A. RandalL and Mi’s M> Gilbert. Results of the flower competition were: Mrs A. Randall and Mis E. Holley (equal), 1; Mrs S. W.right, 3.
