TE AWAMUTU CALF POOL
ADVANCE PAYMENTS UP TO AUGUST 30TH REDUCTION IN PRICES FORECAST An important meeting of the Te Awamutu Calf Pool Committee was held yesterday. Those present included Messrs B. C. O’Connor (chairman), W. R. Barton, W. Perrin, S. H. West, R. S. Clarke, M. A. Tuck, C. J. Flay, A. E. Bryant, R. P- Mandeno, G. L, Daniell and J. E. Hammond (secretary). Apologies were received from Messrs J. T. Young, J. Rea and A. R. Weal.
The chief business concerned reports of meetings in Waikato and Wellington in connection with stabilisation and the reduced prices probable this year. After hearing the reports of the delegates (Messrs O’Connor and Bryant) it was decided to make an advance payment on all calves to 30th August, of 12s 6d, and a final payment of 7s 6d for skinners. The secretary reported that the total collections to date this season were 28,500, an increase of 2500 over the previous year. The advance payment will absorb £17,000. Tanners’ Requirements: Mr O’Connor reported on the action being taken by the Government to investigate the usage of skins for local requirements. We could look forward to a reduction in the number required for this purpose. Exchange Variation: This topic came in for a deal of discussion. After the chairman had stated that the Budget announcement was chiefly responsible for the probable big recession in prices, an amount that may exceed £16,000 in the case of Te Awamutu suppliers, and £350,000 to the dairy farmers of New Zealand. These amounts would be less if the amount going into stabilisation account for skins and veal was reduced. He said negotiations were now taking place with the Minister. Overseas buyers had not regained confidence since the Budget announcement and are no doubt concerned lest other countries may make variations also.
