GARDEN CUP COMPETITION OTHER MATTERS OF INTEREST DEALT WITH At last week’s meeting of the Te Awamutu Beautifying Society, the president, Mr M. H. Williams, presided, and others present were: Mesdames Dawson and Kay, Messrs Green, Clarke, Godfrey, Rae, Page, Reynolds, E. Williams, Melville, Boyt and T. H. Millar (secretary). A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Dawson for her action in completing the planting of hydrangeas at the basketball courts. Mr Melville reported that he had received 28 entries for the Garden Competition and 14 for the Frontage Competition. It was decided that inspections would be made on the last week of September, before the holidays at Christmas and at the end of February, 1949. The following schedule of points to be allotted were fixed:—Flowers: Arrangement 25, quality 30, variety 25, neatness 20; total 100. Vegetables: Arrangement 20, quality 40, variety 20, neatness 20; total 100. Lawns: Neatness 20, quality 20, verges 20; total CO. Paths: 10. Fruit Trees:.Pruning 10, variety 10, cleanliness 10; total 30. Grand total 300 points. Mrs McGovern had advised Mr Melville that she was willing to donate a further prize for the competition. Mrs McGovern was thanked for her kind offer and that the prize be awarded to the best flower bed at the autumn inspection. Mr T. R, Birdsall, agricultural and horticulatural instructor of the Education Department, was appointed judge, with power to co-opt for the flower section if necessary. Mr Melville was appointed steward to the judge. In regards the working bee for the grass planting of the slope at the basketball court: Mr Mason offered to rotary hoe the area and the offer was accepted with thanks. An informal discussion took place as to means of bettering the Floral Fete to .be held in November in Victoria Park. Mr Williams reported having made an inspection of the frontages and having given estimates of the cost to each one seen.
