The old earthenware culvert across the Frankton-Pirongia main highway at Lyn Macky’s failed during the heavy rain of 25th to 27th August, causing an extensive wash-out, and the highway had to be closed. It was necessary to replace the culvert with 24inch concrete pipes, and the highway was re-opened on 14th September. Kakepuku Riding: Tokanui-Kake-puku main road, Mountain, Candy’s, Ray’s, and Factory Roads were lightly patched and the usual grading was done. Some culverts were inadequate to deal with the reecnt abnormal rainfall, but no serious damage was done. A short length of metal was washed off Mountain Road, and this has been replaced. General; The improved weather has already begun to show a beneficial effect on the sand roads, and their condition generally is better this month. The abnormal rains of 25th to 27th August did no extensive damage with the exception of the washout on the Frankton-Pirongia main highway. Most of the minor damage has now been repaired.
