PUAHUE CEMETERY

TRUSTEES’ ASK ASSISTANCE COUNTY COUNCIL’S RESPONSIBILITIES The secretary of the Puahue public cemetery trustees drew the attention of the Waipa County Council on Monday to the urgent need of repairing the boundary fence between the cemetery and Mr Galpin’s property. The trustees also considered that a number of large pine trees should be cut down and removed before any interment took place in the cemetery. The engineer (Mr Macky), in his memorandum, dealt with the matter as follows: “In regard to the trustees’ request for assistance in renewing the boundary fence between Mr Galpin’s property and the cemetery, the chairman of the trustees and Cr Hall met Mr Galpin on 10th instant. The fence needs re-erecting; the length is 8 chains, and the estimated cost of the work is £22, the trustees’ share being £ll. Mr Galpin is prepared to arrange to have the labour done for 20s a chain.” The chairman said the cemetery was given to the people of the district by Mr W. G. Park. No burials had yet taken place in it; consequently the trustees had no funds. Cr Russell asked what was the policy of the Council regarding subsidies or grants to cemeteries in the county. The clerk said the cemeteries were vested in the Council; the trustees only looked after them; the Council was responsible for the areas. Cr Hall moved that the engineer’s recommendation be adopted, and the motion was carried.
