ASSISTANCE WANTED

TE AWAMUTU PUBLIC CEMETERY REQUEST TO WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL The town clerk, Te Awamutu Borough Council, in a letter to Waipa County Council acknowledging receipt of the engineer’s estimate of £l5O for the proposed work of improvement to the grounds of Te Awamutu public cemetery, asked for a decision as to what extent the Council was prepared to assist the cemetery trustees. . . The chairman said a principle was involved, and that was whether the Council should contribute to the cost of upkeep of cemeteries. Cr Alexander thought it was for the trustees to state what amount they wanted. Cr Hall said the burial fees received from, the borough and county were about equal. The county had no representation on the board of trustees. The clerk said that the trustees had a credit balance that had increased progresscively until now they had £5OO. Cr Russell pointed out that a large number of county residents were interred in the Hamilton East cemetery, so that, working along the lines of Te Awamutu’s assumption, there was no reason why Hamilton Cemetery Board should not ask for assistance also. If a grant was made in one case there was no telling where it would finish. Cr Alexander said it was for the trustees to name the amount and give reasons for their request. The chairman suggested that they be asked what they proposed to do with the credit balance, some of which was contributed by way of burial fees from the Waipa county. On the motion of Cr Alexander and Hall it was decided to ask the trustees what amount they wanted.
