WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

' TE KAWA BRANCH The September meeting of the Te Kawa Women’s Institute was held in the Te Kawa Hall on Wednesday, September sth, Mrs Bruce presiding over a good attendance. The meeting opened with the singing of the New Zealand Anthem, followed by the Aspirations read by all present. Mrs Bruce them welcomed the visitors and the business of the meeting was dealt with. It was decided to send a donation of £3 to the Leper Fund. Entries were received for the festival to be held in October. Miss Alderson demonstrated the making of <ag mats and recited a poem which she had written. Both items were greatly enjoyed. A spring bulb show was held and some beautiful blooms were exhibited. Mrs Stewart kindly judged the flowers. Mrs Bruce thanked her and presented her with a lovely shoulder spray. The Roll Call “My Most Useful Wedding Present,” was well responded to and proved very entertaining. Competition results were as follows: Wandering shilling: Mrs Baxter. Premier bloom: Miss Alderson 1, Mrs Chestnut 2, Mrs Thomas 3. Shrub: Mrs Harker 1, Mrs Thomas 2, Mrs Wallis 3. Mrs Thomas 1, Mrs Harker 2, Mrs McLean 3. Child’s school lunch: Mrs Patterson 1, Mrs Bruce 2. The meeting closed with the “Ode to Friendship” and the National Anthem. The hostesses, Mesdames Sedal and Wallis, served a delicious afternoon tea. PUAHUE BRANCH The seventh birthday of the Puahue Women’s Institute was held in the hall on sth September. Visitors from Te Awamutu, Roto-o-rangi, Kihikihi, Hairini and members were welcomed by the president, Mrs Ferguson. Musical items were given by Mrs A. Cavanagh, and the Misses Underwood, Kearsley and Currall and were enjoyed by all present. Mrs Angus (president of Waikato Federation) addressed all members and friends and thanked them for their co-operation and work during the trying years of war. Competitions for a vase of spring flowers was won by Mrs Harlock, Mrs Glass being 2nd. An apron competition was held, the winner being Mrs A. Cavanagh, Mrs W. Cavanagh 2nd. A parcel competition was won by Mrs Taylor. Cup for best bloom, Mrs Harlock. A birthday cake, beautifully iced in Institute colours (lemon and green) was cut by Mrs Angus and Mrs Ferguson. The candles were lit by Mrs Cavanagh and blown out by Mrs Dean. Mesdames Hemmings and Hastie were in charge of the sales table and a delicious afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames Collison, Cooper, Kite, Cavanagh, and Miss Cole. The singing of the Ode to Friendship and the National Anthem brought another happy birthday to a close.
