ROCHE STREET SCHOOL

USE WANTED BY ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

DEPUTATION TO BOROUGH COUNCIL

Mr W. Tootil, representing the St. John Ambulance, waited on the Te Awamutu Borough Council on Monday night to ask that a portion of the old Roche Street school be made available for the use of the Society.

Mr Tootil covered the same ground as he did when speaking as a member of a similar deputation that waited on the Primary School Committee. The town clerk (Mr D. Bockett) read a letter from the Education Board pointing out that the Council’s request to have the property vested in them had been referred to the School Committe for consideration and report. The Mayor (Mr G. Spinley) said that until they got the property they were not in a position to dispose of it. In reply to Cr L. S. Armstrong, Mr Tootil said that in the very near future they would have to get a permanent driver and a second ambulance. There was the work offering now for two machines.

The Mayor said that if the Council got possession of the property they would give the matter favourable consideration.

Cr G. S. Clarke paid a tribute to the wonderful work that the Society were doing. Sometimes they did not get the support of the public that their work warranted.

That closed the deputation’s request. Miessrs Deed and Armstrong, of the Ambulance, were also present.
