American comparisons
Ordered back home for change of duty, Lieut.-Commander Gordon Ross. U-S.N.R., has since his return penned some interesting notes comparing wartime conditions in New Zealand with those in his own country. “Our tempo,” he says, “is faster than yours and I think that it is due to more gasoline, construction equipment, hand tools, power hand tools, and the present availability of critical materials. The quantity of food in the U.S. seems to be ample but there is quite a lot of maladjustment in distribution. I prefer your bread, particularly the whole wheat loaf, to most breads here, but most Americans would not agree to this on their own part. Large quantities of citrus fruits are on sale; oranges are very expensive but grapefruit from Texas are plentiful and sell for about twopence. Commercial which is a poorer grade of beef is selling retail at Is 6d a pound and good cuts about 3s. I find too, that I prefer pork with the hide on and that T like New Zealand bacon. Your lamb is tops, none better. * Butter is selling at 3s a pound and up, and in very short supply; in the stores the housewife is lucky to get a quarter pound at a time. I haven’t seen any whipped cream at all. Wellington pity milk is much superior; around here it is decidedly inferior. I think vour fine milk is due to good handling, green feed and Jersey blood.”
