WORK AT KARAPIRO

PROGRESS OF THE TUNNEL. CONCRETING SEGMENTAL ARCH ) Steady progress is being made at the Karapiro Hydro-electric Works with the driving of the diversion tun. nel. About 200 feet of the segmental arch, which is the top section of the tunnel, has been excavated, and the concreting has been commenced. Sub-contractors are pushing ahead wJdi the cement silo, near the dam site, which will be 60 feet high when completed. A huge concrete mixing plant is also in course of construction. Huge quantities of reinforcing steel have been carted to the isite and stacked on special frames. It is estimated that 1200 tons of steel will be required for the dam, and about haif this amount has already arrived. Large supplies of metal are being carted to the site from Grinter’s quarry at Whitehall, and dumped in huge stacks, according to the size oi the chips. The new school has been completed, and the permanent houses are becoming ready for occupation. The engineer, Mr J. T. Gilkison, moved into Ihe first of them during the weekend.
