FAMOUS LEADER
GIANT OF BALKANS IS DEAD. Nicolai Titulescu, once Foreign Minister of Rumania, has died at Cannes. He was pro-French and pro-Rus-sian. Carol kicked him out of office
while he was ill and in France on a holiday. From that day Rumania started her slide towards the Nazi abyss. Titulescu in his time had so much influence that rumours of attempts to murder him were frequent. A circumstantial story of slow poisoning once interested all Europe. “He looks like a mongoloid monkey; . . . his wit and unquenchable vivacity are famous . . ; he wears an overcoat indoors, even on the hottest day . . . ; he has twice been president of the League of Nations Assembly, and in 1935 was president of both the Little Entente, and the Balkan Entente, comprising populations of almost 70,000,000 people.” ■That is what John Gunther wrote about him in “Inside Europe.” Titulescu has died too soon to learn the answer to the great Balkan questions.
