DRUG SHORTAGE
REPORT FROM CANBERRA. A report from Canberra states that despite the Federal Government’s £70,000 drug chest of narcotics, formerly obtained from an enemy or enemy-occupied countries, a shortage of certain imported drugs has occurred. Obviously we have to do without a lot of things that some of us may fancy for specialist treatment of cer-
tain illnesses,” said a senior officer of the Federal Health Department today. “Nevertheless, the Medical Equipment Supply Committee, which controls the drug chest, is doing a wonderful job, dealing effectively with each problem as it arises.” This committee, under the chairmanship of Sir Alan Newton, comprises representatives of the military and Federal health services. Experts of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research are investigating methods of producing opium in Australia. It is understood considerable progress has been made and that there are good prospects that before long Australia will be independent of outside sources.
