ON RETIREMENT

LETTER FROM RAILWAYS GENERAL MANAGER. APPRECIATION EXPRESSED. In a letter to hand from Mr G. H. Mackley. the retiring General Manager of the New Zealand Railways pays a fine tribute to the Press. He writes:— “As you have already announced in your news columns, I am retiring from the position of General Manager of Railways on the 31st of this month, having completed on that date exactly 40 years’ service with the Department. “May I take this occasion to express my very real appreciation of the goodwill and friendly assistance extended to me and my executive officers by you and your paper throughout the period of over seven years that I have occupied my present position.

“In particular, the opportunities you have given me to reply to querries and criticisriis by correspondents regarding railway affairs have been most generous, and through these, and other avenues that the Press in general has opened for railway information, I believe public understanding and appreciation of the railway position has been clarified and increased. “For the many occasions on which you have assisted the Department and myself in these directions, please accept my warmest thanks. I trust that the same spirit of mutual confidence and co-operation will be extended to my successor, Mr Casey, and his officers.

“With all good wishes towards yourself and the organisation you represent.”
