HONIKIWI NOTES

ANNUAL SPORTS HELD. (Own Correspondent.) The Honikiwi Sports Club held its annual sports meeting on New Year’s Day, under ideal weather conditions, and there were visitors from all over the' countryside, including several from Te Awamutu, Otorohanga, Te Kuiti, Te Rau-a-Moa, and Kawhia. With Messrs R. Sklenars as secretary and Doug. Williamson and J. Wiest as stewards, the events of the day were carried through in a capable manner. The judges of the principal events were Mrs Grierson and Messrs Ralph Harty and H. Graham. Their awards were: —• Youths’ chop: N. Graham 1, P. Graham 2, H_ Kohi 3. Open chop: B. Tane 1, L. In the evening a very happy dance was held in Graham’s barn. Messrs D. and C. Williamson acted as masters of ceremonies, and the music was supplied by the Honikiwi String Band. Quite a large number of patrons attended, and among them were noticed:— Mrs G. Rattray, green shot taffeta. SOLDIER FAREWELLED. A farewell evening was tendered to Private George Garvin prior to his leaving the district to go on military service overseas. The function was largely attended by settlers from ’ Honikiwi and the surrounding dis- ’ tricts. Private Garvin, who was the first local lad to enlist, was presented with an engraved wristlet wateh from the settlers and friends in the Honikiwi district, and with a fountain pen from the local Social Club in appreciation of his serivces to the Club over quite a number of years. KITCHEN EVENING. On Saturday evening last a kitchen ■ evening was given in honour of Miss. Marie Graham and Mr Trevor Rob- j erts, when in spite of the very stormy weather* prevailing there was a large assemblage of friends and well-wish-ers. Mr Slatter, on behalf of all present, wished the popular local couple every happiness in their married life, and also asked them to accept a huge array of useful and ornamental gifts for their new home. Mr Roberts responded in a few happy words. A very jolly evening was concluded with musical honours accorded the happy couple.
