W.T.C.U.

TE AWAMUTU BRANCH. MONTHLY MEETING, The monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held last week in the Presbyterian Hall, which looked very attractive with bowls of beautiful flowers, berries and autumn leaves. The president, Mrs W. Alexander, presided and the devotional was taken by Mrs Parkinson. The beautiful duet, “Ivory Palaces,” was very sweetly sung by Mrs J. C. Young and Miss Storey. After the usual business was attended to a very interesting and comprehensive address was given by Captain Lamond on the work of the Salvation Army. The speaker spoke of the origin and aims of the army, and traced the work from its commencement to its present day activities inall its departments. She gave instances, too, of the changed lives and consequent blessing, resulting from the rescue and other social work carried on by the army. Mrs Alexander thanked the captain for her very informative address.

The president then referred to the departure from the district in the near future of the cradle roll superintendent, Mrs Civil, and expressed the members’ deep appreciation of Mrs Civil’s kindness and help in all that pertained to the work of the W.C.T.U. On their behalf, and as a token of esteem and good wishes, she asked Mrs Civil to accept the gift of a cushion.

In replying, Mrs Civil said that the help she had rendered had been a pleasure to her. A dainty afternoon tea was then served, and the meeting closed.
