FIRE BOARD’S REQUEST

HELD IN ABEYANCE. A mild echo of recent discussions on excessive spending by the Borough Council was heard at last night’s meeting when a request was received from the Te Awamutu Fire Board for an extension of facilities to provide a hydrant connection in Albert Park where it was hoped, to hold competitions and demonstrations in connection with other brigades. Sympathy with, the request was expressed by Mr Spiers; and this caused Cr. J. Sterritt to remark that although they had warnings of the stringency of finance, they had already bought a mower and now proposed further expenditure at the Fire Board’s request. Objection to being to task before he had moved in the direction of any expenditure was expressed- by Cr. Spiers. Disagreement with the idea that the work could be done out of the water work’s loan was expressed by Cr. A. C. Brookes who said he wanted his vote recorded against any such proposal. The contention was expressed that the work had been agreed to be done out of the water work’s loan and the Fire Board had been informed of that intention was held by two councillors; and finally it was'decided to hold the request in abeyance until: it was known if finance would be available from the loan when the work for which it was raised was completed.
