HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

LACK OF PUBLIC INTEREST.

ANNUAL MEETING DECIDES TO DISBAND.

The attendance at the annual meeting of the Te Awamutu Horticultural Society, on Thursday evening, was disappointing in view of the prioi announcement that at the meeting it would be decided whether or not to resume holding annual exhibitions. Mr H. C. Rainey, president, occupied the chair, and there were also present Mesdames D. Bockett, R. Dawson, W. H. Davis and A. Wheatley, and Messrs D. Bockett, M. H. Williams, E. Williams, J. Brown, R. Godfree (Parawera), F. Mason and W. H. Davis (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Mr W. J. Melville and Mesdames W. P. Locke and A. H. Storey. The annual report was read and received. The financial statement, tabled by Mr M. H. Williams, showed a credit balance of £l3.—Received. Accounts amounting to £1 7s 3d were passed for payment. The president said that before proceeding with the election of officers members should reach a decision as to whether there was sufficient interest to justify going ahead and holding further shows. He personally was very disappointed at the meagre attendance at the annual meeting. Mr Mason said that in view of the lack of interest shown it could hardly be expected that the society should carry on its activities. Mr M. H. Williams said he would be very sorry to see the society disband, and he suggested that quarterly garden evenings be arranged, with a view to creating more interest in the society’s work. Mrs R. Dawson suggested that the Horticultural Society and Beautifying Society should amalgamate and thus further the interests of both organisations. After some further discussion it was decided, owing to lack of interest, that the Horticultural Society disband. Messrs Rainey and Williams were appointed trustees for the banking account and *to take charge of all the gear belonging to the society. After a round-the-table talk the meeting decided to set up a commit-, tee to promote flower displays, with a view to stimulating a healthy interest in flower shows, and finally all present consented to act on that committee.
