VALEDICTORY

MR AND MRS STAN. VINCENT. SOCIAL AND PRESENTATION. (Our Otorohanga Reporter.) There was a record assemblage of settlers and their families of the Waitomo Valley, Honikiwi and Otorohanga districts to farewell the Vincent family, who are leaving the district after a long residence. The function was held in the woolshed on Graham’s farm, at Honikiwi, and took the form of a social and dance. Eulogistic references were made by various speakers to the popularity and worth of the Vincent family. On behalf of the settlers, Mr Graham presented Mr Stan. Vincent with a hairbrush set, Mrs Vincent with a valuable travelling rug and a dressing table set, Leslie with a modern school kit, Neil with a fretwork set, and Scott with some plate and tableware.

The Maoris of the Hauturu Pa gave a farewell dance, which was much enjoyed by the pakehas present. Monologue entertainment was provided by Mr Austin and Mr W. Kolii. The singing of “Old Lang Syne” and “For They are Jolly Good Fellows” brought a memorable function to a close. MR REG. HODGES HONOURED. POPULAR HOST COMES TO KIHIKIHI. A large number of Morrinsville friends assembled on Saturday afternoon to bid farewell to Mr Reg. G. Hodges, who has been “mine host” at. the Nottingham Castle Hotel, Morrinsville, for the past seven years. Mr Hodges, who has just taken over the license of the Alpha Hotel, Kihikihi, was presented with a silver tea and coffee service and tray, which was subscribed for by many residents of Morrinsville and district.

The presentation was made by Mr J. M. Allen, who referred to the support given by Mr Hodges to the various sports organisations and to everything for the good of Morrinsville and district. Mr Hodges had been a good citizen and had always been willing to help in any way anything for the welfare of the district. All forms of sport appreciated the assistance given. His Morrinsville friends wished him success in the future and hoped that their gift would be a reminder of the friendships he had made during his stay in the district. Musical honours were accorded with enthusiasm. In thanking Mr Allen for his remarks and those present for their evidence of goodwill, Mr Hodges said that what little he had been able to do to help all forms of sport he had considered both a duty and a pleasure. He had done his best to please the public, and it would seem from the gathering that day that he had given a certain amount of satisfaction. (Hear, hear.) The very fine present would be treasured by him as a token of friendship rather than of any services he might have given. He would look forward to seeing Morrinsville friends when they passed through Kihikihi. On Friday evening the whole of the staff of the Nottingham Castle Hotel assembled, and through the new manager, Mr H. Scholium, presented Mr Hodges with an E.P. ash stand. Mr Scholium thanked Mr Hodges on behalf of the staff for his unfailing courtesy and advice, and wished him every success in his new venture. He said that although Mr Hodges had been the manager he was a worker and always appreciated the staff’s position.
