LOCAL ELECTIONS

WEDNESDAY’S POLLING RESULTS. COUNTY, HOSPITAL, AND TOWN BOARD CONTESTS. In general with the rest of New Zealand, the local elections in connection with the Waipa and Otorohanga County Councils, the Waikato Hospital Board, and the Kihikihi Town Board were held last Wednesday. WAIPA COUNTY. OLD COUNCILLORS RETURNED. There were contests in only three of the Ridings of Waipa County, the ridings affected being Kakepuku, Rangiaohia and Newcastle. In the last named there w’ere three candidates for two seats, while in the other two there were straight-out contests. .In all three cases the sitting members were returned. KAKEPUKU RIDING. G. S. Clarke . 82 W. J. Melville 33 At Te Awamutu polling-booth Clarke received 29 votes, and Melville 9; at Te Mawhai Clarke was 13 to Mel- I ville's 14, and at Pokuru Clarke received 40 and Melville 10. At Te Awamutu there, was one informal bal-lot-paper and one declaration vote. RANGIAOHIA RIDING. G. S. Hall 125 G. T. Crawley • 35 At Te Awamutu Hall received 95 votes and Crawley 17, while at Puahue Hall scored 30 to Crawley’s 18. At Te Awamutu there was one informal ballot-paper and three declaration votes were recorded there, while at Puahue three ballot papers were informal, and one declaration vote was lodged. NEWCASTLE RIDING. D. B. Livingstone 208 F. L. Onion 167 S. S. Saulbrey ....~ 58 There were ten informal votes and five declaration votes. At Te Awamutu booth no votes were recorded for this contest, but at Te Kowhai Livngstone recorded 68, Onion 47 and Saulbrey 23. At Whatawhata Livingstone was given 55, Onion 42 and Saulbrey 14, while at Horotiu the votig was: Livingstone 40, Onion 39, and Saulbrey 11. Frankton booth saw Liv’ngstcne gain 43 votes, Onion 37 and Saulbrey 10, while at Koromatua only four votes were recorded—two each for Livingstone and Onion. THE OTOROHANGA COUNTY. SURPRISE IN WHAREPAPA RIDING. The elections for the two contested ridings in the Otorohanga County’ Council were held on Wednesday and resulted as follows: WHAREPAPA RIDING. (Two Members.) A. Jamieson 83 W. Thomson 71 R. Dymore-Brown 41 W. McGfll 58 C. McDonald 51 J. A. Maxwell 29 Informal 3. Messrs Jamieson and Thomson were therefore duly elected, the former taking the place of the defeated sitting member, R. Dymore-Brown. HONIKIWI RIDING. There were two candidates for the Honikiwi Riding seat, the polling being: H. C. Grierson 45 | E. L. Strawbridge 40 I The, personnel of the Council now I stands: Walter Bluck (chairman), and P. T. Crowley (Mangaorongo Riding); H. C. Grierson (Honikiwi); V. W. Simms (Otewa); F. Potts (Te Rau-a-Moa); A. Jamieson and W. Thomson (Wharepapa); with Mr S. J. Fortescue (County clerk), and Mr Gerald Jackson (County engineer). TOWN BOARDS. KIHIKIHI AND PUTARURU. GOOD POLLS RECORDED. There was a more than ordinary keen contest at Kihikihi for the five seats on the Town Board. Nine candidates were nominated, including two of the members of the retiringBoard, Messrs A. Maunder and W. Q. McGhie. The electors showed their confidence in these gentlemen for they’ topped the poll, though in reverse order, Mr McGhie getting 126 votes and Mr Maunder 123. Neal, 184; Dr G. C. MeDairmid, 171; *N. Fitzherbert, 167; A. R. Vosper, 155. Unsuccessful; *R. Lee, 151; *W. R. Pass, 117; *N. H. Ashford, 106; IL E. Taylor, 99. HOSPITAL BOARD. THE CONTESTED SEATS. WAIPA COUNTY AND LEAM INGTON. (Two seats for Waipa County and town district of Leamington.) There were three candidates for the Waipa County representation on the W’a kato Hospital Board, two to be elected. The candidates were Messrs D. B. Livingstone and S. C. B. Macky and Mrs I. A. R. Collins. Mr Macky was a sitting member with Mr J. J. Ryburn (chairman of the Board), who did not seek re-election. There were 25 polling’-booths for the convenience of voters on Wednesday, and when the final returns came in it was seen that the position of the candidates was:— S. C. B. Mackv 567 D. B. REPRESENTATION OF BOROUGHS. The contest for representation of the boroughs of Te Awamutu, Ngaruawahia and Huntly was between tfwo candidates, Messrs Richard Eyre and S. Saulbrey. There were polling places in each of the three centres, and when the aggregates were compiled it was seen that the sitting member, Mr Saulbrey, had been defeated by the Mayor of Ngaruawahia, for the figures were:— Eyre 1199 Saulbrey 870 At Te Awamutu. the polling was: Eyre 357, Saulbrey 372, the latter thus having a majority of 15, while it was rather remarkable that there fifteen .nformal votes. At Ngaruawahia Eyre polled exactly the same number of votes as at. Te Awamutu, viz., 357, while Saulbrey scored 215; here again there were seven informal votes. At Huntly, Eyre increased his lead, for he secured 485 votes to Saulbrey’s 283. At Huntly seventeen informal votes were recorded. TE KUITI BOROUGH AND WAITOMO COUNTY. Mrs C. K. Wilson 437 A. Blackman 359 C. S. Brook 241 J. M. Boddie 11l G. Elliott 158 Mrs C. K. Wilson was therefore reelected for her third term as a member of the Board.
