ACCIDENT AT KAIPAKi
SEQUEL IN CAMBRIDGE COURT. BOTH DRIVERS FINED. As a result of an accident which occurred on the Kaipaki Road on February 21, Raymond Francis Stites was charged in the Cambridge Court on Wednesday with failing to his position to the left of the centre line of the roadway. He pleaded not guilty and was defended by Mr F. Kingsford. William Willoughby stated that at the intersection of the Kaipaki Road with the Te Awamutu - Hamilton Highway, a collision occurred between his car and a vehicle driven by Stites. He would plead guilty later to a charge of failing to keep to the left of the road, but he did not consider he was responsible for the accident. He said that Stites had been travelling too fast. His vehicle was turned over as a result of the impact. Mr F. Kingsford stated that a triangle of grass had formed at the intersection, through vehicles cutting the corner. It was reasonable to assume that any driver would follow the formed roadway and not go over the grass. The Magistrate; The local body may be responsible for that. The graders could have removed the grass. In evidence, Stites stated that he had commenced to make his turn, when he first saw Willoughby’s car. He considered that he had the right-of-way, and had Willoughby continued on his original course, there would not have been an accident. Stites w’as fined 10s, with costs 12s. William Willoughby, the driver of the other vehicle, pleaded guilty to a similar charge of failing to maintain his position to the left of the centre line of the roadway. He was also fined 10s, with costs 12s.
