PROSECUTIONS IN LOCAL COURT. FINES IMPOSED. Several local and district motorists were charged in the Magistrate’s Court, Tie Awamutu, this morning, at the instance of the police or the Transport Department’s inspectors, with breaches of the traffic regulations. Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., presided. A young man named Stanley Ronald Nichols, of Tauranga, was charged with negligently driving a motor vehicle on the Kihikihi Road, Te Awamutu, on April 16 (Easter Saturday). Nichols did not appear. Constable Forsyth told the Court that Nichols collided with another car while negotiating a bend, at an excessive speed.—A fine of £2 10s and costs 10s was imposed. Inspector J. L. Dawes, for the Transport Department, charged Joseph Woodward with speed'ng at Tokanui on March 25.—A fine ot* £3 and costs 10s was inflicted. Robert Mitchell wrote admitting a charge of operating, on March 29, a motor vehicle with an inadequate head lamp, near Tokanui Hospital. The inspector said Mitchell was “cutting the corner.”—His Worship remarked that this type of motorist was a menace on the road and deserved no leniency A fine of £3 with costs 12s was the penalty. James Douglas Hey did not appear to answer a charge of operating a motor vehicle on the Pirongia Road on April 7. after dark, with inadequate headlights.—A fine of £1 10s and costs 10s was the penalty. Francis Rolf Cavanagh was charged with having no heavy traffic license on March 28.—Mr S. S. Preston explained that Cavanagh, through ilL' ness, had overlooked the need for renewal of the license. He had been driving motor vehicles for 17 years, and had never been in trouble before. —Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 12s, only. William. Kinnaird, who was charged with driving a motor vehicle at an excessive sped at Kihikihi in February 6, did not appear. Inspector F. C. J. Cook told the Court’that he fol lowed Kinfiaird’s vehicle at a speed cf 40 miles per hour. That speed was dangerous at night time.—A fine of £2 10s and costs 12s was imposed. Lionel E. McDonald admitted speeding with his car near Kihikihi on the n'ght (moonlight) of April 6. He said his speedometer was out of action and he did not know he was exceeding the limit. This was his first offence.— A fine’ of £1 10s and costs 10s was imposed. Jack Telfer also adnvtted speeding near Kihikihi on April 7. in the early hours of the morning. Inspector Cook said his speedometer recorded 50 miles per hour. He also found that Telfer had no license to drive, anti this fact would be the base of a later prosecution.—A fine of £2 with costs 12s was imposed. Harry Roy Clarke was charged with travelling through the restricted area of Ohaupo at an excessive speed on March 17. Inspector Cook said Clarke’s speed was 40 miles per hour, and the limit was 30 miles.—A tine of £1 10s and costs 12s was the penally.
