THE RAINFALL

PRECIPITATION FOR APRIL. LOCAL RECORDER’S FIGURES. Te Awamutu experienced a wet month for April, according to the figures of Mr W*. Jeffery, the official recorder. The total fall was 7.04 inches, and the heaviest precipitation for 24 hours was for the period ended sth instant, when 2.09 inches of rain wer«. recorded. Incidentally it may be remarked that the fall recorded for the 24 hours ended at 9 o’clock yesterday morning was .94 inches. As will be remembered, March was a record dry month, nothing being recorded throughout the 31 days. The figures for the first four months of the years 1936, 1937, and 1938, kindly made available by Mr Jeffery, make for interesting comparisons. For instance, in January, 1936, the total was 6.92 inches, and for the same month last year it was 4.30 inches. January of the present year saw a recording of 7.22 inches. February 1936, provided 7.72 inches of rain; January of last year was 1.76 inches; and February of this yeat saw the total 5.36 inches. The fall for March, 1936, was 3.09 inches, and a year later it was 3.35 inches. This year the month of March was totally dry. April of 1936 was rather more rainy than the previous month, for the recording was 4.97 inches. A year later it was 5.26 inches; and this year April showed 7.04 inches. Last year rain fell on 18 days in April, and the same number of day. u showed rain during the month just past. It may be of interest to note that rain for May, 1936, totalled only 1.87 inches; a year later it was 7.14 inches so something between those figures may be expected for the current month. The total fall for the twelve months of 1936 was 56.6 inches, and for 1937 it was 44.66 inches. Already this year the total is 19.62 inches.
