COUNTY RATES
POSITION IN KING COUNTRY. CROWN AND NATIVE LANDS. The rating of farm development schemes and of native land were subjects of deputations to the Minister of Lauds, the Hon. F. Langstone, from the Te Kuiti Borough Council, Waitomo County Council and Mangapu Drainage Board. For the county, Mi* W. A. Lee asked that special rates on farm development schemes should be met by the department, otherwise settlers in those special rating areas would be called upon to make up deficiencies. He also asked that both special and the general rates be paid on those development schemes which had been brought into production, those which had been in occupation about four or five years. Mr Langstone said he would be pleased to pay rates on these properties as soon as the Audit Department would permit it. A strong plea was made for consideration through losses of native rates. The borough lost £5OO a year, or a seventh of the rate revenue, and the county £3500 a year. It was particularly asked that grants be made in respect of tho Mahoenui native development scheme, which appeared now to be self-supporting.
