WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

KIO KIO BRANCH. BIRTHDAY .PARTY. (Our Resident Representative.) The fifth birthday party of the Kio Kio branch of the Women’s Institute was largely attended, Mrs Luxmorc presiding. Many members from fraternal branches were present, all joining in the singing of the “Ode to Friendship.’’ The points prize for the past, year was awarded to Mrs Wallace, while numerous seasonal bouquets were presented to Mrs Luxmore. The president presented shoulder sprays to Mesdames’ Stuart, Telfer , and Wallace, while Mrs S. J. Sanson presented Mrs Luxmore with a posy of woodpulp flowers, and a similar one to Mrs Wallace, in appreciation of their past, work for the branch. The musical programme was opened by a piano solo by Mrs Cumpstone. This was followed by a game of musical sticks, won by Mrs Alan Bell. Accompanied by Mrs Bell on the piano, Mrs Cockburn, of Otorohanga, delighted her appreciative audience with several song renderings. Highland dances by Miss Weir were delightful specialities, as was the singing of solos by Mrs Palmer. A game, “Fishing,” was won by Mrs Stocken, of Te Kuiti. The birthday cake was an elaborate affair and was beautifully decorated by Mrs Sanson. The National Anthem brought the enjoyable proceedings to a close. MANGAOKEWA BRANCH. ANOTHER BIRTHDAY PARTY. (Our Resident Representative.) The fifth birthday party of the Mangaokewa branch of the Institute was opened with the institute song, “Comrades and Friends.” the president, Mrs Brown, conducting the proceedings. Members presented a beautiful bouquet to the president as a mark of appreciation of her past services. Miss Crozier, secretary of the Federation, was welcomed, as were the presidents of the .Puketutu and Aratoro branches. Miss R. Whitehouse rendered a pleasing duet with Mrs Cathie, while a very amusing playlet, “Cats’ Claws,” was performed by Mrs Clough and Misses B. Taylor and J. Whitehouse. A pleasing item was a musical monologue by Mrs R. Waghorn. Community singing was featured, and games and competitions enjoyed by the younger set. Representatives from fraternal branches each cut a slice from the large birthday cake, after which a dedelightful afternoon tea was served. ROTO-O-RANGI BRANCH. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Roto-o-rang! branch of the Women's Institute was held at the residence of Mrs Hills, Mrs Wakefield presiding. After reciting the Creed the business of the meeting was dealt with. Mrs Wakefield presented an excellent report ot the annual conference of the Waikato Federation of Women’s Institutes held in Hamilton. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs Pegg was responsible for the following motto, “Concentration is the Key of Strength.” A competition arranged by Mrs Pegg, who also donated the prize, was won by Miss Edna Partridge. Short talks on different subjects by each member proved interesting. The roll call was “Beauty Hints.” • A substantial donation of used stamps was given by Mrs Wakefield for the New Zealand Crippled Children’s Society. The hostesses were Miss Gwen Nickle, Miss Jeannie Reid and Miss Cornwall.

An enjoyable afternoon closed with the singing of the National Anthem. Members extended sympathy to Mrs Workman and her family in their bereavement.
