GOOD ACCEPTANCES

NEXT SATURDAY’S RACES. SUCCESSFUL MEETING ASSURED. Good acceptances have been received for the Waipa Racing Club’s Winter Meeting at Te Awamutu next Saturday. The W. G. Park Steeplechase has attracted a field of ten, the wellperformed Tudor.’ being topweight, and the Woodstock Stakes has drawn a field of the same size. Details: —■ HACK AND HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE. Of £150; about 21 miles.

THE PUKEKOHE MEETING. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Backwood.”) The Bay off Islands Club has in the last two c.r three years held its annual race meeting at Pukekohe, by arrangement with the Franklin Club, and this year’s fixture is to take place on Wednesday (Coronation Day). The fact of the holiday should assure the northern club a very successful meeting, especially if the weather happens to be fine. The meeting being only three day before the Waipa winter meeting, at Te Awamutu, and ten days ahead of the bigger meeting at Te Rapa, with quite a number of the same horses engaged, it is of particular interest to South Aucklanders. It should be noted that the first event on the programme is timed for 11 a.m., and the last at 4.18 p.m., so that patro.ns may return to their homes at a reasonable hour. The first event is the Gloucester Hack Handicap, about seven furlongs, and Gay Rebel looks like finding Gnand City and Okawa hardest to beat. The Kent Hack Hurdles has a big field engaged, mostly novices, those with proved form, and therefore near the top of the handicap, should be preferred. The best appears to be Spearcourt, though he is probably not a good one. Of the novices Mungacre, Grand Score and Diaquedoon might be best, especially the latter. There is a huge array of horses—not necessarily talent—in the Windsor Handicap, with Gay Rebel top at 9.0. He will probably tackle the earlier event. Huntsman’s Chorus and Libra should be in demand, with

Stormy Weather and Ivy Willonyx next best. The King George Handicap, ten furlongs, will puzzle investors to find a favourite, but what’s the matter with Sinking Fund ? He has run some excellent races in far better company, and should be the chief selection here. Miss Lu and Knight of Australia look to be likely to fight out the finish with the top-weight. The Coronation Steeplechase has Valpeen, 10.12, at the top. He has steadily come down in the weights, but is a good horse. Blaok Marlin is somewhat in the boom, though a novice over country, and he may be favourite with Roxy and Valpeen next choice. Free Air and Lucidus are entitled to consideration. The Hack Cup has the much improved Jewelled Girdle has top-weight, and of the light weights perhaps Thurwind and Dutch Girl will be best at the distance. Grand City (if reserved) and Rsngshot are nicely placed. Kelly, 9.5, is to carry No. 1 saddlecloth in the Queen Mary Handicap, six furlongs, and there is a nice aggregation of sprinters, of whom Shy, Sir Tommy and Crooning (especially the latter), appeal most. Prcfessinoal and Strathire will probably be very hard to beat in the Princess’ Handicap, a hack six, and if a surprise is in store it will probably come from Ellanui.
