THE GAME OF GOLF
THE TE AWAMUTU CLUB. OFFICIAL OPENING. The official opening of the Te Awamutu Golf Club’s new links took place on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of about 200 players including many visftors. Dr Blundell, in a neat address, referred tc. the auspicious occasion, and warmly welcomed the large and representative attendance of golfers and well-wishers. The club had faced a fairly heavy liability, but, judging by the enthusiasm already displayed, he and his executive officers were confident the outcome of that enterprise would be one of the finest golf links in the whole countryside. The financial responsibility was a Substantial one but he hoped members would share that responsibility as widely as possible. He extended a warm welcome to the non-players representing other sporting bodies, and hoped they would yet turn their energies and enthusiasm to golf, the best of all outdoor games. A tribute was also paid to the club’s patren, Mr S. Clark, who had donated the furnishings of the new club house—a gift that was worthy of him and decidedly appreciated by the Club. The president then afforded Mr Clark opportunity to reply. In doing so, the patron said he was proud tc. be associated with the club, and to be able to help it in its important venture. He added that he intended to have the ball that had been used by the president in formally declaring the links open mounted for presentation to the club as a momenta of the occasion. Dr Blundell then drove the first ball and thereafter a Canadian foursome was played, J. O’Sullivan and Miss M. Clark tying with G. Woods and Mrs McLean, the respective scores being 45-9-36 and 47-11-36. In the toss, Woods and Mrs McLean were successful.
