TE AWAMUTU LIBRARY
MEETING OF SUBSCRIBERS. THE YEAR’S OPERATIONS. The annual meeting of subscribers to the Te Awamutu Library was held last evening, His Worship the Mayor (Mr George Spinley) presiding. LIBRARIAN’S REPORT. The librarian (Mrs H. Bell) submitted the following report:“During the past year 394 new books have been made available to. subscribers. Of these 84 are nonfiction 222 novels, and 88 mixed thrillers and ’ wild west: in addition, 37 second-hand books have been added. “An average of 2500 books are issued monthly, the chief demand being for good fiction. There are 260 subscribers. About 20 discontinued their subscriptions during early summer but probably all will rejoin. “I should like to suggest that the present system of placing the new bocks on the mantlepicce on a given day each month be discarded. If each month’s supply were divided into four lots and these books placed on the shelves in their proper order each week and then advertised in the local paper at the end of the month, there would be fairer distribution. Those who wished, could still reserve after the list had been published. This method has been adopted by a large number of libraries, including Hamilton. The rule allowing only one new book to each person could still hold. The reading room is well patronised and I very rarely find any of the papers damaged. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers were elected: Committee: Mrs H. Empson, and Messrs. J. P. Brown, H. T. Haselden. Hon. secretary: Mr W. D. R. McCurdio. Hon. treasurer: Miss Hawke. Hen. auditor: Mr K. Gibbs. In future new books will be placed in the fixtures one month, on the first Tuesday, and on the alternative month on the first Thursday.
