A reported statement by the High Commissioner for New Zealand (Mr W. J. Jordan) that “ there will be no need for any more troopships to leave New Zealand if I have my way,” was the subject of a question by Mr W. P. Endean (Opposition, Parnell) in the House of Representatives on Wednesday. He asked the Prime Minister (Right Hon. M. J. Savage) whether he could reconcile Mr Jordan’s reported statement with another by the High Commissioner at Geneva, to the effect that New Zealand would impose full sanctions on an aggressor. In reply the Prime Minister said that if the policy enunciated by Mr Jordan at Geneva were adopted in its entirety by the members of the League of Nations the possibility of war would be considerably minimised. Furthermore, in advocating such a policy, Mr Jordan was advancing the desire on the part of every good citizen to save the people of New Zealand from becoming involved in a further disastrous and avoidable war.
