LAWN TENNIS
TE AWAMUTU CLUB. The Te Awamutu Lawn Tennis Club has arranged to open the new season with a big assembly of players on the Victoria Hark hard courts on Saturday next, 26th inst., and it is expected there will be good representation from many neighbouring clubs. Prospects for the new season are considered bright, quite a number of new members having been elected, the men’s section being especially well i/op resented. Lately the club has arranged for electric supply to the pavillion—a facility that will be appreciated when dispensing hospitality. The two courts that were laid down a year or so 'ago are to be top-dressed nexit month, and endeavours will be made to have the remaining two courts surfaced, thus giving the club seven splendid hard court* for play. It was arranged to present Mrs S. Clark’s trophy, for the most improved player last season, at the official opening next Saturday. Offers of trophies for this season by Mrs Clark and Mr A. L. Gilmore were gladly accepted. The fact that the club’s dance had had to be postponed from September 26th to October 7th. was mentioned, and approved. This year’s opening- has a special significance for it is 25 years since the club transferred its activities from a location at the corner- of Sloane Street and Brady Street to Victoria' Park.
The club has the distinction of having- two of its lady members, MisS R. Bell and Mrs A. Bowler, figuring prominently on the Waikato ranking list, while. Mr S. M. Clarke achieved prominence in several open competition tournaments.
Following lare winners of club comoetitions last season:—Men’s championship singles, S. M. Clarke; ladies’ championship singles, Miss R. Bell; naan’s! championship 'doubles, E. I. Miller and H. I. Miller; ladies’ championship doubles, Miss R. Bell and partner; combined championship doubles, E. I. Miller and Miss G. Bell; men’s handicap singles, S. M. Clarke; ladies’ handicap singles, Miss L. North; men’s handicap doubles, E. I. Miller and H. I. Miller; ladies’ handicap doubles, Misses M. and L. Cruickshank; combined handicap doubles, J. Sinnott and Miss M. Steadman; men’s junior handicap singles, M. Blair; ladies’ junior Handicap singles, Miss N. Chunn.
The trophies won are to be, presorted at the official opening next Saturday.
