ST. LEDGER’S ROAD

“IN A TERRIBLE CONDITION.”

Messrs W;. J. and F. H. Linehan, H. C. Brill and A. F. Brill, F. Alcock, and C. Conlon wrote as follows to Monday’s meeting of the Waipa County Council: “We, the undersigned ratepayers on St. Ledger’s Road, wish to bring before the notice cl the Council the shocking condition of the unmetalled portion of this road. It is in a frightful state, and is totally impassable for motor traffic, the mud being at least a foot deep in places. Mr C. Conlon has not been able to walk on the road for the past four months, on account of the mud. We have just received your rate demands, and find that our rates have increased—in fact, nearly doubled—owing to consolidation of loans; and it is rather ironic that we should be called upon to contribute towards the repayment of loans for ‘back-block’ roads when we ourselves have to use such a road, and this only three miles from Te Awamutu ! We trust that the Council will give the matter of metalling this portion of the road earliest consideration, and with a view of facilitating matters we are prepared to make a cash donation towards the cost of metalling.” It was remarked that at least one of the signatories regularly drove his dairy herd along the road, and that was really the cause of the mud. The engineer said the cost of metalling would be about £3OO.

Cr Onion said the engineer and riding member should put a stop to the practice of driving herds along the road from paddock to paddock. The practice was stopped in another part of the county. The request was referred to the riding member and the engineer..
