THE MOUNTAIN ROAD

GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY BUT NOT FREE GRANT.

The following communication from the Minister of Public Works, Hon. R. Semple, was read at Monday’s meeting of the Waipa County Council:—

“ Further to my letter of 27th August I have to advise you that I have carefully studied your request for a more liberal subsidy towards the metalling of Kakepuku Mountain Road. It seems that your Council’s difficulty to lifting the subsidy already offered is due to the riding system of finance, and it is my opinion that this system should be abolished. I regret that I am unable to offer free money for this metalling work, and I think your Council should make every effort to lift this subsidy which has already been offered.”

The chairman, answering a comment by a councillor from the northern end of the county, said it should be realised that this did not refer to the proposed road to the summit, but really to the road right round the base of Kakepuku mountain.
