Cabled advice has been received that Dr N. S. Alexander, of London University, son of Mr C. M. Alexander, of Mangaplko, has been appointed to the position of Professor of Physics at Singapore University.

His many friends will be pleased to learn that Mr W. Glasgow, who has been an inmae of an Auckland private hospital for a considerable period, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery, and is now able to leave hospital, though he intends to reside for some time in Auckland. He hopes to be able to resume his usual avocation towards the end of next month.

Te Awamutu Croquet Club held a very enjoyable and successful social afternoon at Mrs H. A. Burchell’s residence on Wednesday, when about thirty members and friends attended. Euchre and bridge were played, the respective winners being Mesdames O. A. E. O’Brien and G. Paul, and the hidden number prizes went to Mesdames J. Ryan and D. Bockett. Delightful afternoon tea was partaken of, and before the close Mrs Burchell was heartily thanked for making such a pleasant function possible.

On Tuesday evening a very pleasant time was spent at the home of Mr and Mrs C. S. Davis, Puniu Road, when a large number of friends met to tender a kitchen evening to Miss Joyce Davis, whose marriage to Mr Geo. Frew is shortly to take place. Games, musical items, and dancing, with Miss Winnie Gilbert at the piano, made the evening pass all too quickly. At about 11 p.m. a sumptuous supper was served, after which Mr S. Nelson proposed the health of the happy pair, and they were accorded musical honours. Mr Frew, on behalf of his future wife and himself, thanked, in a happy speech, all nresent for their good wishes. An adjournment was then made to the drawing-room, where Miss Davis was asked to accept and open the numerous parcels containing many useful articles for her future home. The evening concluded with thanks to the host and hostess for their kind hospitality.
