BUTTER-BOX TIMBER
WHITE PINE EXPORTATIONS. Information concerning the policy of the Government in respect to supplies of timber for butter boxes was sought by Mr C. H. Burnett (Government, Tauranga), in notice of a question to the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. W. Lee Martin, in the House of Representatives on Friday. Mr Burnett also gave notice of his intention to move for a return giving the following particulars: The annual exportations of white pine over the past five years; the importations of butter boxes or timber for the manufacture of butter boxes over the same period and from what source; the estimated quantity of white pine in the North Island and in the South Island; the substitutes the Department of Agriculture contemplates using as white pine timber becomes unprocurable; the dairying industry under existing production, and the nature of the steps being taken this year to deal with the situation, especially in the Auckland province.
