BAND CONCERT

ENTERTAINING ITEMS. The Te Awamutu Municipal Band's concert on Sunday evening in the Theatre (Royal attracted a fair attendance of patrons, and all appeared to enjoy the fair provided. Proceedings opened with the Band playing the march “ New Colonial,” and for an encore the two-step “ Blaze Away ” was presented attractively. Then Mr A. J. Sinclair contributed the exquisite word-poem “ The Master Builder,” in accomplished manner, and greatly to the delight of the audience. Bandsman Zinsli was heard to advantage in the euphonium selection, “ Polka Rrilliante,” and Mr Jas. Horsley followed with tenor solos, “ When Love is Sweet ” and “ Pal of My Dreams,” both proving very acceptable. A newcomer to local audiences was bandsman Wm. Ellison, introduced as a novice cornetist. He gave a veryfair rendering of “ Londonderry Airs,” and the Band followed with the selection, “ Minstrel Memories,” a rather long piece, including extracts from many favourites. Mrs Meikle was accorded a hearty reception for her soprano solos, “ Carmen ” and “ One Fine Day,” and her husband proved himself a clever saxophonist with the selections “ Sacks of Fun ” and “ Indian Love Call,” the latter earning him a second encore. Miss N. Old, another newcomer, presented the mezzo-soprano solos, “ Love’s Blindness ” and “ Largo,” most effectively. The Band next contributed a number of old Scottish airs, styled “ Kirkconnel Lea ” and “ We’d Better Bide a Wee,” greatly to the satisfaction of all lovers of Scottish music, especially. Bandsman Zinsli was again heard to advantage with the euphonium selection, “Down in the Deep Cellar,” the player demonstrating the range of this well-known instrument very cleverly. The fantasia, “Autumn Echoes” and the march “ Wellingtonian,” the latter being the test march chosen for the next band contest, was presented by the band, and in both the players were heard to advantage. The programme concluded with the National Anthem!. The accompanists for the evening were Mesdames Meikle and Hillmer, Miss P. North, and Messrs A. J. Sinclair and Rollett.
