ADDRESS ON GAMBLING.

The monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperande Union was held on Thursday last in the Presbyterian Hall, which was decorated with bowls of flowers and foliage in autumn tints. The president occupied the chair and after the opening exercises and business was dealt with, Mrs W. Woodward sang “ The Children's Home,” which was much enjoyed. The Rev. Mclntyre was the speaker and gave a very telling address on the “ Evil of Gambling-.” In his opening remarks he stated that for many years he had been interested in the work of the W-C.T.U., and had been favourably impressed by the work accomplished in the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Mr Mclntyre said each branch of the union was a unit of a world-wide organisation, whose well known motto was for “ God, Home, .and Humanity." He theri alluded to the evil of gambling as a menace to the welfare of the country and encouragement was given to it by Government legislation. The speaker referred to the pernicious practice of seeking to profit by anything which means loss and injury to others. He gave many illustrations from personel knowledge of the evil effect of gambling and stated that the gambler is never satisfied even when he appears to win. Gamblers never rise to a moral standard, and the evil habit grows with them. Mr Mclntyre concluded by urging the union to use all its influence against this great evil. The president moved a vote of thanks to the speaker and the meeting was closed with the singing of a hymn, and the Benediction was pronounced. Afternoon tea was then served.
