COLOURS PRESENTED
TO WAIKATQ REGIMENT.
IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY AT HAMILTON.
Thousands of people assembled at Hamilton yesterday for the impresrive ceremony of trooping the old colours of the Waikato ißlegiment for the last time and of presenting the regiment with new colours. The ceremony took place at the Hamilton High School grounds, and his Excellency the Governor-General took a promiment part. It is recalled that the colours now replaced were presented by the then Governor-General, Lord Liverpool, at a big encampment at Hautapu (near Cambridge), in May, 1914.
There was a distinguished military aspect about yesterday’s ceremony, and most of the prominent military officers of the province took part. Lord Galway inspected the battalion, and the large representation of returned soldiers and veterans. Drums were piled and the new colours of the regiment placed on them, where they were dedicated and consecrated by the Dean of Hamilton, Rev. T. P. Weatherhog, after which Majors Gibbons and Bateson received the new colours. Then followed a most inspiring and impressive address by the GovernorGeneral, at the close of which Colonel Closey thanked Lord Galway, and assured him the colours would be retained unsullied.
The general salute and march past in review order followed, and the memorable ceremony concluded.
