Mr G. R. Magill, who will leave shortly for England to join the Royal Air Force, was made the recipient of a presentation by members of the Hamilton staff of the New Zealand Herald, on Friday. Mr Magill will be remembered here as a contributor to the Municipal Band’s evening concerts last year.

Mr S. Ferguson, of Te Mawhai, who left last month on a holiday visit to Australia, returned last week. The holiday was curtailed owing to Mr Ferguson developing an abscess on the left wrist that necessitated surgical.and hospital treatment right up to the day before he left the Notrth Coast of New South Wales (where he was visiting relatives) on his homeward journey. Mr Ferguson says his wrist still requires treatment, but he is hopeful that a further operation will not be necessary.

The death occurred in Hamilton on Saturday of Mr Hugh Hunter, aged 78. Mr Hunter was bom in Geelong, and he amrived in Hamilton with the Fjourth Waikato Regiment on August 24(fe 1864. Mr Hunter was only a tad at the, time. He was engaged in a bakery business at Otorohanga and in the timber trade at Mangapeehi and Mananui. For the last 12 years he has lived in retirement in Hamilton- Mr Hunter did not marry.

His many friends in Te Awamutu and neighbourhood will be interested to learn that Mr A. (“Bffitt”) White, fog so long associated with Tokanui Hospital as chief engineer, and for the , past eight years at Avondale Hospital, retires on superannuation in August, after 35 years’ service with the Mental Hospital Department. Mr White joined the service at Wellington in 1901, after several years as a marine engineer, and he was posted to the staffs of practically all the larger mental hospitals. He came to Tokanui when that institution was established, and -then transferred to Avondale (where he hod served eaglier). Last Friday he was met by the’staff, and the superintendent asked Mm to accept as a goodwill gift a beautiful chiming clock, with many expressions of appreciation and good wishes for the future. Mr White is now on three months’ leave, prior to his retirement on superannuation. Mrs White is, we regret to say, at present an invalid, and is being nursed by her daughter, Mrs E. Kirk, of Bank Street. Later Mr and Mrs White intend to make their home at St. Heliers.
