THE LAST WORD
HEATED POLITICAL DEBATE. When the Labour Department Am endment Bill reached the committee stages in Parliament recently there was a lively interlude. The Government accused the late Government of certain malpractices and the Chairman of Committees had a lively half hour calling Ministers and members to order. First of all Mr Polson came to grips with the Prime Minister, and then Mr Bodkin and the Minister of Labour had a wordy battle. Later Mr Broadfoot (Waitomo) entered the arena and said it was a, pity that so much heat and so little light had been introduced into the debate. The Prime Minister: We are not going to bite, brother. Don’t worry.
Mr Broadfoot: The Minister of Labour should not judge everybody by his own standard. Tlie Minister: I would be very sorry to judge myself by your standard. Mr Broadfoot: Some day you may be able to, when you have been elevated a little. Thus .the debate ended.
