DEATH AT WAIKERIA
QUESTION RAISED IN HOUSE. Circumstances relating to the death of a*prisoner, Roy Gordon Capel, at Maikeria, were referred to by the Minister of Justice, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, in replying to a question asked in the House of Representatives on Wednesday by Mr W. T. Anderton (Government, Eden). The Minister replied: “The circumstances associated with the death of the inmate show that every attention was given the deceased in his illness. He was first seen by the visiting doctor on March 29 on account of sore throat, which was epidemic at Waikeria at that time. He then had quinscy ready to burst, and which did burst an hour or two later. Next day the doctor paid a special visit to deceased. An officer was specially detailed to supervise the deceased and ethers who were sick at that time. “The superintendent personally saw him twice a day, his cubicle door was kept open at night, and he was visited every halt hour. On April 2 the doctor again paid a special visit and very carefully examined the patient, and thereupon decided that he should be under observation in hospital. His departure was delayed until the following day on account of his high temperature that evening. The patient was removed in a. sedan car. The doctor's opinion is that deceased was suffering from septicaemia following on a sore throat, and that no other treatment that deceased could baye had would have been likely to affect the course of the illness.
