LIFE OF LORD JELLICOE
INTEREST IN TE AWAMUTU DISTRICT. Upon reading the announcement earlier in the year that Admiral Sir R. W. Bacon was preparing data for the publication of a book setting out incidents in the career of the late Admiral Viscount Jellicoe, former Governor Genetai of New Zealand, a Te Awamutu district settler wrote to the biographer telling of some incidents experienced by Lord Jellicoe while in New Zealand. One of the incidents was the wonderful welcome accorded him in Te Awamutu, especially when the late Mr Peter Barton harangued him at great length, and with particular vigour and vehemence, on behalf of the Maori people. Now comes the following acknowledgment from Admiral Bacon, written from Braishfield, Hampshire: “Many thanks for your interesting letter and typical incident in regard to Lord Jellicoe. He had a wonderful knack of appreciating what others did or were trying to do, and in- this instance saw at once that honour was being done to him—although in an unexpected way. It is very good of you to send me so graphic a description.”
