MAIL ARRANGEMENTS

EXPEDITING THE DELIVERY A letter suggesting a means of expediting the delivery of the evening mails from Auckland has been received by the Te Aroha Chamber of Commerce. The communication was as follows: I desire to bring under the notice of members of your Chamber of Commerce means by which mails per main trunk railway from Auckland to Te Aroha could be delivered consider- j ably earlier than at present. The -t. Postal Department, if prepared to take advantage of the Auckland Star Motor Service between Frankton Junction, Te Aroha and Paeroa, could arrange to have mails leaving Auckland at 7 p.m. delivered in Te Aroha the same night at midnight. The mails could be sorted before 8 a.m. next morning, instead of 10.30 a.m., and thus give business people and the public generally an opportunity of replying within an hour or two. I feel quite sure that if the matter is correctly represented to the Postal authorities and the Auckland Star representatives a very satisfactory arrangement would follow. I am prepared to say that the Star representatives would be willing to convey the mails at a nominal figure.—Yours faithfully, K. D. Wright. On receipt of the above letter the president at once recognised the advantages that would ensue to the business people and the public generally if such a scheme could be brought into operation, and submitted a rough outline hjs to the benefits to be devised, which -are as follows: — 1. The mails could be sorted and placed in the letter boxes by 7 a.m. 2. The sorting could be arranged without any hardship to the local staff, in fact it would be preferred, as the work would be spread more evenly over the day. ,

3. Letter carriers could get out much earlier with the first delivery, ! and ijhis same delivery would be considerably speeded up.

4. Letters received in the morning v could be replied to by the 11 a.m. train, thus obviating the heavy rush of mail for the evening train. 5. The service would be ‘more efficient and in every way an improvement to the town.
