MILITARY SERVICE APPEALS

NO. 2 BOARD SITS AT TE AROHA

The No. 2 Military Service Board, Messrs F. Earl (chairman), A. Rosser and F. Hockley, met at Te Aroha on Friday for the purpose of hearing and dealing with appeals. The first case called was that of John Hogan, farmer, Manawarn, for whom Mr Gilchrist appeared. It was pointed out that last month the case was heird and adjourned to allow the brother to enlist. The military representative stated the Department would cot apply the provisions of Section 35 to the brother, has appellant had already been drawn in the ballot. The former could also take bis chance in the ballot.

Mr Gilchrist suggested that the present case was one for the Efficiency Board to investigate. He did not want to shield himself behind It's brother, but could not find anyone to take charge of his farm of 307 acres Appellant, sworn, said he had worked his farm from June, 1915, and the first year sent to the butchers over 400 fat cows, and since June last about 300 head had been dispatched. His farm was one of the best iu the district. Ho sold the baef to the exporters.

The case was adjourned sine die’ and was referred to the Efficiency Board.

William Craig, farmer, Waitoa’ whoso case was deferred from last month, was represented by Mr Gilchrist. A brother, Alex. Craig, had volunteered and been accepted to go into camp on June 26tli.—Adjourned sine die.

Jack Watt, storekeeper, Whangamata, another whose case was deferred last month was granted exemption till May 29th. John L. O'Sullivan, farmer, Waitoa, was granted until 26th June. His case was heard last month and deferred. His brother Daniel’s appeal was dismissed, he being classed as medically unfit. Gilbert R. BeU, farm manager’ Tatuanui, who was appealed for by his employer (a soldier) last mouth came forward and it was stated that his employer had meantime with‘drawn the appeal. The Board »s awaiting certain information. Alex. McLean, plumber Thames, was granted until May 31st. Edward J. Holmes, farmer, Mangaiti, goes into camp on June 26th.

James Corbett, chemist’s assistant. Hikutaia, was granted until July 24 to allow him to sit for his chemist’s examination.

William N, Simm, coach painter’ Paeroa, was classed C2. and his ap peal therefore dismissed. M. J. Dobbiug, engineer, Morrinsville, was represented by his father in support of evidence tendered lasf month. The Board criticised the delay in forwarding facts last month, and intimated that a decision would be come to in the course of a few days.

Patrick and John Treanor,' contractors, Waihi and Paeroa, were called under Section 35 and had since been drawn in ballots. Pat. rick had been granted till April 15th by the First Military Board, and last month the present board extended exemption till May 3lst. Johu Trcauor’s case was last month adjourned sine die. This decision was altered to three months’ exemption, David Bruco Hastie, Farmer> Walton, was granted exemption sine die. Appellant thanked the Board, and stated he hoped to make such arrangements as would allow him to proceed to camp very soon.
