A charge of one cent is made on every letter posted, the necessary stamp being engraved, “ Canada War Tax, One Cent.” This will bring in a large revenue, and probably not press unduly individually. The Department of Internal Affairs has already received nearly £ro,ooo in accouut of the “ Hospital Ship ’’ Fund. The date for the Taumarunui election has been fixed for June 15th, ©ne week later than that for the Bay of Islands. Messrs Redgrave & Kirby have donated to the “ Hospital Ship ” Fund, a sack of “ Champion ” flour. This will be sold at Mr J. D. Morison’s au:tion mart on Saturday next. Mr F. W. Wild, treasurer of the Hospital Ship Fund desires that all unpaid subscriptions be sent in to him forthwith, as the money has to be sent to Auckland to-morrow'. In all there were 6416 New Zealanders in the Boer War in ten contingents, the total casualities being 421, and the number of lives lost 176. These losses w'ere spread over the two and a-half years of the campaign, the heaviest occurrTng'in the engagement fought by the Seventh Contingent at Bothasberg. The Australian casualities in South Africa were 120 officers and 1280 men.

The organisers, Misses Teague, have the general arrangements well forward, and an enjoyable time is assured. At the Waikato Winter ShowtA opened yesterday, Messrs W. Dunn and Sons were the most successful exhibitors in the Poultry section, and therefore gained the aggregate prize. In addition, the Leghorn and Wyandotte points prizes and four special prizes were won by them. In all this firm won 36 prizes with 31 entries. Next to Messrs Dunn and Sons, Mr A. G. Yardley was the most successful in the Wyandotte classes, winning all those for whites with one exception.

Edgell’s Fund, and 15s through the St. John’s Ambulance. Last evening between seven and ten o’clock there was a splendid display of the “ Aurora Australis.” The colouring was unusually beautiful, and the effect brilliant indeed.
