VOGEL'S LIBEL ACTION. Wellington, Last Night. VogeTs libel action against the Evening Press began to day. The claim is for £1500 damages for each of two articles referring to what was known as the Wai- j mate Railway Scandal. plea is that the matters referred to in the articles set forth in the statement of claim, are matters of public interest and concern, and that the alleged libellous statements were fair comments on all matters' therein referred to. nud were published bona fide and for public benefit, without any sinister or malicious motives, and without negligence and in honest belief of the truth thereof. Mr Travers appeared, for Fir J. Vogel ;Mr Bell for defendants. Chief Justice Prendergast on the Bench. Mr Travers opening address was lengthy, and up to lunch time only two witnesses had been called, McDonald gavo ' evidence as to the impression caused on him by reading the articles. Vogel was then calledf and answered a question or two from Travers, after which he Aras cross-examined till luncheon adjournment, chiefly as to his action in the House, when the report of the committee came up and his connection with the New Zealand Agricultuaal Company.,

FIRE AT DUNEDIN. , JDunedin, Last Night. A fire occur/ed in Walker street, resulting in the*death of an old lady named Mrs Joyce, who was 82 years old, her death being caused by suffocation, the fire having caught her clothes.
