CARNIVAL NOTES.
(BY THE 0.5.) Yesterday was an exceedingly busy day for bullion gatherers and “some business’ is reported everywhere. Mrs. .Smith's committe wore particularly vigilant and did remarkably good work in the- vicinity of the saleyards. Miss Fordo’s supporters wore also very much in evidence, and Mr. O’Cal-
laghan was successful in securing quite a number of names for his banner, and, please don’t forget it, at a "pound a time.” The "Red Cross” adherents were working . quietly and systematically, here, there, and everywhere, and there was a look on Mr. Dunbar’s face which plainly said, “We got our share of the bullion.”
The friends of Miss Whenuaroa wore not idle and the secretary of her committee, Mr. Downing, was button-hole-ing all and sundry with commendable energy, and, incidentally, excellent results. Mr.. Richmond Davis also made his presence felt, very much so, and as a "pocket tightener, ” when patriotic purposes are concerned, ho is a past master.
The friends of the Utiku representative, Mrs. J. Gilchrist, assembled in good force and scored quite a number of substantial wins. The Utiku folk are very optimistic and make no secret of their ability to win and win handsomely.
The Carivnal Committee are taking over the King’s Theatre on Monday next, October 4th, and, will run special picture entertainments durng the period of the Carnival. Every person paying one shilling at the door will receive a ticket in an art union drawing entitling the holder to a chance of winning a.valuable prize and .12 votes for his or her favourite Queen Candidate. The admission charge for children will be the same as usual.
The ladies interested in "Our Boys’ ” Candidate continue to work with the one aim, namely the snaring of the nimble shilling. The euchre party to-night will be held in the Town Hall as the supper room used last week was found inconvenient in many ways, and a strong gentlemen’s committee has boon worked up to assist the ladies in organising a comfortable and pleasant evening. At the last‘meeting of the Ladies’ Committee hearty votes of thanks were accorded Mesdames Wrightson and Dash wood for their splendid assistance in arranging and carrying out the gift evening and afternon. To-morrow night a monster concert and dance will be held at Turangarere to assist the "Red Cross” Candidate’s prospects, and the indications are that the function will be a great success.
A social and dance will be hold at Oluitu to-morrow (Friday) evening in aid of Mrs. .T. Gilchrist’s candidature.
